Biography
Dr. Javier E. Ponce joined Barry University (BU) as an Assistant Professor in 2025. He holds an M.S. in Counseling from BU, as well as a B.A. in Psychology and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Florida Atlantic University.
As a counselor educator, Dr. Ponce strives to foster effective professor-student relationships that counselors-in-training can emulate in their work with clients. He is also a licensed mental health counselor and marriage and family therapist who specializes in helping clients who primarily experience depression, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, and marital difficulties.
Dr. Ponce’s research interests include wellness, stress, and burnout in counselor education; evidence-based theoretical orientations; and multicultural sensitivity and competence with ethnic minorities. He is a former doctoral fellow of the National Board for Certified Counselors and a current member of the American Counseling Association, American Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling, and Florida Counseling Association.
