2026 UHCSR Policy

Student Health Insurance Requirements

Barry University strongly recommends that all students maintain health insurance that provides comprehensive coverage.

Student Health Insurance Plan

  • Coverage provided through UnitedHealthcare Student Resources (UHCSR).
  • Includes nationwide coverage within the United States.

Students Automatically Enrolled and Billed 

The following students are automatically enrolled and billed for the Student Health Insurance Plan:

  • Students living in campus housing
  • International students on an F-1 or J-1 visa
  • Student-athletes
  • Undergraduate Nursing students
  • Graduate students in:
    • Podiatric Medicine
    • Physician Assistant
    • Anesthesiology
    • Law
    • Occupational Therapy

Waiver Information

  • Eligible students may waive coverage by submitting proof of comparable insurance that provides coverage in Florida.
  • Waivers must be completed during the published waiver period.
  • Waivers must be resubmitted each Fall semester.
  • Students who miss the waiver deadline will remain responsible for the insurance charge.

Important Reminders

  • Check your Barry email and student account regularly for insurance notifications and deadlines.
  • Missing emails or deadlines does not qualify for a billing reversal.
  • Students participating in programs outside South Florida (e.g., Tampa, Orlando, clinical rotations) must maintain health insurance coverage in their local area.

Housing Students

  • Students assigned campus housing will be billed for the insurance plan.
  • If billed, you must complete the waiver process (if eligible) during the waiver period.
  • Insurance charges cannot be removed after the waiver deadline.

Insurance Requirements

What Is Considered Adequate Health Insurance?

To waive the Barry University Student Health Insurance Plan, your insurance must:

  • Be issued by a health insurance company licensed to operate in the United States and Florida.
  • Provide coverage in the area where you attend classes, clinical rotations, or internships.
  • Remain active throughout the semester of enrollment.
  • Include access to primary care providers and specialists.
  • Include inpatient and outpatient medical care.
  • Include inpatient and outpatient mental health and substance use treatment.
  • Include prescription drug coverage.
  • Pay healthcare providers directly (reimbursement-only plans are not accepted).
  • Have an individual deductible of no more than $4,500 per policy year.
    • Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) plans are exempt from this deductible requirement.
  • Include hospital and emergency care coverage.

Not Accepted

  • Emergency Room–only or Urgent Care–only plans.
  • Reimbursement-only insurance plans.
  • International insurance plans.

Additional Requirements for International Students

  • International students may waive the Barry University Student Health Insurance Plan only if they have a U.S.-based insurance plan (such as Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, or UnitedHealthcare).
  • The insurance plan must include Medical Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains benefits, or the student must purchase supplemental coverage that provides these benefits.

Waiver Process

Required Students

Students who are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan must:

  • Complete the insurance waiver during the designated waiver period if they have qualifying coverage.
  • Upload a copy of their insurance card when submitting the waiver.
  • Submit the waiver within the published waiver period.

Important: Insurance charges are non-refundable after the waiver period closes.

Using the Student Health Insurance Plan

Student Health Services (SHS) is the most convenient and cost-effective place to access care if you are enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

Student Health Services Offers:

  • Primary care services for most common student health concerns
  • Full-time healthcare provider
  • Low or no out-of-pocket costs for many covered services
  • Scheduled appointments and limited walk-in availability
  • Free telehealth services

Referrals for Off-Campus Care

If you need care that is outside the scope of Student Health Services:

  1. Schedule an appointment with the specialist or provider.
  2. Contact Student Health Services at 305-899-3750 to request a referral.
  3. Provide:
    • Provider name
    • Specialty
    • Reason for visit
    • Fax number

Please request referrals at least 24 hours before your appointment whenever possible.
Referral Exceptions
A referral is not required if:

  • You are located more than 50 miles from the main campus.
  • You are a student attending the Law School campus.
  • You are seeking care after hours, on weekends, or on holidays.
  • The provider does not require a referral.

Additional Information

Procedures for Filing an Accident Claim

If you are injured and require medical attention, please follow the appropriate steps below.

Occupational Exposure (Needlestick or Exposure to Blood or Bodily Fluids)

  1. Immediately wash the affected skin with soap and water.
  2. If mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth) are exposed, flush thoroughly with water.
  3. Report the exposure to your clinical supervisor immediately.
  4. Seek medical evaluation as soon as possible from an Emergency Room, Urgent Care Center, or other qualified healthcare provider to determine whether post-exposure treatment is necessary.
  5. Follow all federal (OSHA), state, clinical site, and Barry University program requirements for reporting and documenting occupational injuries and exposures.

Other Injuries

Examples include sprains, fractures, cuts, or other injuries requiring medical attention.

  • Seek medical care as soon as possible at:
    • Student Health Services
    • An Urgent Care Center
    • An Emergency Room
    • A Private Physician's Office

Filing a Claim

  • This is a supplemental reimbursement plan that may reimburse eligible out-of-pocket expenses not covered by your primary insurance.
  • Keep copies of all receipts, bills, and Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) from your insurance carrier.
  • Gather all supporting documentation before submitting a claim.

Important: Reimbursement is subject to the terms and conditions of the insurance policy. Please refer to your plan documents for complete coverage details and claim submission requirements.
 
 
Premium Rates for All Full-Time Students

  • Fall 2026 8/11/2026 to 1/5/2027:  $1,141
  • Spring Summer 2027: $1,673
  • Summer only 2027: $671 (this will only be applied to required new incoming students in the summer semester)

  •  Out-of-Pocket Maximum Preferred Providers - $9,100 (Per Insured Person, Per Policy Year)
  • Out-of-Pocket Maximum Preferred Providers - $18,200 (Family maximum, Per Policy Year)
